Influencer marketing in India: a practical guide

India is not one market. Here is how to plan a campaign that reflects that.

One country, many audiences

A Marathi food creator in Pune, a Tamil tech reviewer in Chennai and an English-first fashion creator in Mumbai reach audiences with almost no overlap — and they price very differently.

Treat a national campaign as a set of regional campaigns that share a message, not one asset translated five ways.

Regional language is the arbitrage

Far fewer brands compete for regional-language creator inventory than for English inventory, which usually means better cost per engaged view in tier-2 and tier-3 markets.

Filter creators by publishing language, not just by city — many creators in metros publish in a regional language for a nationwide diaspora audience.

City-level campaigns

For restaurants, clinics, salons, gyms, retail and real estate, the entire campaign lives or dies on catchment. City filters, not follower counts, are the primary tool.

  • Metros — Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata
  • Strong tier-2 markets — Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Indore, Kochi
  • Fast-growing — Chandigarh, Surat, Bhopal, Nagpur, Gurgaon, Noida

Disclosure rules you must follow

ASCI's influencer advertising guidelines require disclosure that is upfront and prominent — visible without tapping 'more', and in a language the audience understands. Labels like 'ad', 'sponsored', 'collab' or 'paid partnership' qualify.

Write disclosure into the brief. It is the brand's responsibility as much as the creator's.

Where budgets go furthest

Spreading a budget across several micro creators in two or three cities produces more usable learning than one macro deal — you find out which market, message and format actually work, then concentrate spend next round.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an agency to run influencer marketing in India?
No. A marketplace with structured discovery and direct messaging lets small teams run campaigns without agency overhead.
Which language performs best?
The one your buyer thinks in. In most tier-2 and tier-3 markets, regional-language content outperforms English on engagement per rupee.
